The WeCare-Association is a non-profit and independent association that supports sustainable projects in Kenya and Cambodia and helps people help themselves. As initiators, we support projects so that they can then be handed over to the local population. Our cooperation is characterized by respect and consideration for the culture, history and customs of the local society.
In 2007, Susanne Riz began holding a bazaar at her home, which developed into an important annual fundraising event. Over 11 years, the bazaar has raised a total of CHF 520,000 for good causes and financed numerous projects in Kenya and Cambodia. In 2016, Susanne Riz and husband Robert Buchbauer founded the non-profit association “WeCare-Association” in order to professionalize the association’s activities.
The name of our association comes from the slogan “Yes We Can” from Barack Obama’s 2008 election campaign – a motto that perfectly reflected our drive. After our first trips to Africa, it became “We Care”: because the well-being of the local people is close to our hearts. We want to support them in shaping their own future.
Our aim is to help local people to build a better, dignified and self-determined future for themselves and their families. Our main focus is on projects that enable people to achieve financial independence through work.
We work closely with the local population and NGOs active on the ground to identify actual needs and define projects in consultation with them. The type of cooperation varies depending on the country and culture. In Kenya, for example, we invest in infrastructure projects such as the construction of wells to improve the population’s quality of life and strengthen the local economy.
We see ourselves as midwives for our projects and strive for sustainable solutions. A successful project is a project that no longer needs our help. This philosophy gives rise to projects such as the farm in Olpirikata or the Femmes des rizières social brand project in Cambodia, which contribute to strengthening the local community in the long term.
