Borehole Olpirikata

An important basis of life for the Maasai is the availability of water – for themselves and for their livestock. In 2010 and 2011, there was a major drought in their tribal area and sooner or later they would have been faced with the decision of water for the people or for the animals. However, a decision against their cattle would also have meant “moving” to the slums of Nairobi, as the cattle are their most important source of income.

That is why the proceeds from the 2011 bazaar went to the “A well for Olpirikata” project and we installed a well that pumps water up from a depth of 170 meters with the help of a solar-powered pump. The ground consists of rock and drilling to a depth of 170 meters was a major and costly challenge.

The project was planned by Giorgio Girella. The drilling and construction work was carried out with the help of the local population. They are also responsible for distributing the water.

The first geological drilling took place in January 2012, the state drilling permit was issued in mid-June 2012 and drilling began on August 9, 2012. After 24 hours, water was found at a depth of 170 meters. On September 3, 2012, several water samples were taken over a period of 24 hours. The tests in a specialist laboratory in Nairobi confirmed the drinking water quality. The pump and generator went into operation on November 1, 2012. Two locals are responsible for maintenance. The water is sold for 20 Kenyan cents for 5 liters (approx. 0.2 centimes).
