The Rehoboth School: An Impressive Mission

Since the beginning of 2023, the WeCare Association has been a proud supporter of the Rehoboth School, located in the middle of Kitengela Nonkoopir, the largest slum in the Kajiado District. Find out more about the school’s inspiring mission and its founder, Jane Gitonga.

Education against all odds

The Rehoboth School was founded in 2014 with a clear vision: To give disadvantaged children in the region the opportunity for education. Find out how this private school in Kenya takes in the poorest of the poor and waives school fees to make education accessible to all.

The challenges before and during the pandemic

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the school had around 170 pupils, largely financed by sponsorships. However, the pandemic brought financial bottlenecks that threatened the school’s existence. Find out how the WeCare Association responded to this crisis.

A life-changing help

The WeCare Association took over the school’s fixed costs from January 2023 in order to provide the children with three meals a day. In addition, the teachers’ salaries, rent and school materials are also covered. This support brought the number of pupils back to 170 and the children’s health improved.

A school without violence

At Rehoboth School, corporal punishment is prohibited, unlike many other schools in Kenya. This practice makes for a safer and more welcoming learning environment where children are not only educated but also feel secure.

Strengthening the community

Donations for school materials and uniforms have significantly improved cooperation with parents. The school now motivates teachers and pupils alike, and the quality of teaching has been improved by hiring additional and more qualified teachers.
